Bird flu: A looming threat to poultry farms across the nation. Starting today, a nationwide housing order has been put into effect for all poultry and captive birds due to the escalating risk of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. This critical measure, announced last week by the Department of Agriculture, aims to protect our poultry populations.
This decision comes after the confirmation of two separate bird flu outbreaks on commercial turkey farms, serving as a stark reminder of the virus's potential impact. The first outbreak was detected on a farm in Carlow on Tuesday, followed by another on Wednesday near Kells, Co Meath.
To manage the spread, protection zones within a 3-kilometer radius and surveillance zones extending 10 kilometers have been established around both affected sites. The Carlow outbreak is particularly noteworthy, marking the first instance on a commercial poultry farm in Ireland in over two years.
Across the border, Northern Ireland has also been grappling with the issue. Since Thursday, a housing order has been in place there as well, following the confirmation of two bird flu outbreaks on separate poultry farms on Friday. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 strain on farms in counties Fermanagh and Tyrone.
