FIA GT World Cup Macau: Fuoco Dominates Super Pole! FR, F4 & TCR Qualifying Highlights (2025)

Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping weekend at the Macau Grand Prix! The first-ever FIA GT World Cup Super Pole has delivered an intense qualifying session, setting the stage for an epic race.

In a thrilling display of skill and precision, Italian driver Antonio Fuoco made history by securing the Super Pole position for the FIA GT World Cup. He'll be joined at the front of the grid by his AF Corse teammate, Yifei Ye, driving the Ferrari 296 GT3. But here's where it gets controversial... the untried qualifying format, with its unique Q1 and Q2 sessions, has left some drivers divided.

The iconic street track witnessed an exciting shootout as the top 10 drivers from Q1 took to the circuit one by one, each armed with a fresh set of Pirelli tires. Fuoco's impressive 2m15.535s lap time not only secured him pole position but also broke the existing Macau GT lap record.

"I love this format! It's all about extracting the maximum from your car in just two laps," Fuoco exclaimed. "We did an incredible job, and starting at the front in Macau is a huge advantage. We still have a long weekend ahead with two races, but at least we're in a great position for tomorrow."

Edoardo Mortara, known as "Mr. Macau" for his impressive seven race wins in the Special Administrative Region of China, echoed Fuoco's excitement. "The Super Pole lap I just did is probably the best I've ever done here in the last 20 years. I took risks, hit barriers, and it paid off! I'm still shaking from that adrenaline-fueled lap!"

However, not all drivers were as fortunate. Sheldon van der Linde, a favorite for the Super Pole, unfortunately crashed during Q1, leaving him on the sidelines.

In addition to the FIA GT World Cup, the 72nd Macau Grand Prix week features three other FIA-sanctioned categories: the FIA FR World Cup, the FIA F4 World Cup, and the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour.

The Qualification Race pole position for the FIA FR World Cup went to Théophile Naël, who narrowly beat Freddie Slater to the top spot. Evan Giltaire completed the top three.

"The track conditions in Qualifying 2 were tricky, but we managed to improve our lap times. It was a challenge with the red flags, but we maintained our position and found the right moment to push," Naël explained.

The FIA F4 World Cup Qualification Race saw 16-year-old Sebastian Wheldon claim pole position for his first street race. Wheldon, whose late father Dan was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, demonstrated his intent and skill in Free Practice 2, setting the pace and showcasing the category's close competition.

Néstor Girolami secured his first pole position of the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour season, outpacing his title rivals Yann Ehrlacher and Thed Björk. Girolami's impressive performance earned him 15 points and a well-deserved spot at the front of the grid.

The Macau Grand Prix is more than just a race; it's a celebration of motorsport passion. It brings together single-seater, GT, and touring car drivers from various championships worldwide to test their skills on one of the most demanding circuits.
